The Hermes 900 was first used by Israel during Operation Protective Edge in July 2014. It had undergone test flights and was not scheduled for operational deployment until late 2015, but was introduced during an operation for one-off missions that could perform better than the Hermes 450. A few days after receiving the order to deploy the aircraft, a certain Kochov was prepared for "temporary action ". The Hermes 900's first operational mission took place on July 15, 2014, one of the links in a chain of operations that ultimately led to a fighter strike that destroyed terrorist infrastructure. Maintenance of the aircraft during the operation was performed by Elbit personnel because IAF ground crews were not yet qualified to perform maintenance, and mission stations had Elbit representatives to direct operators during combat flights. After the operation was completed, the Hermes 900 returned to integration and flight testing to complete the milestones that had yet to be achieved.
